News: U2’s tech firm takes Microsoft to court
(timesonline.co.uk) -- A TINY technology firm set up by U2 is taking on Microsoft, the software giant, in an American court. Burst.com, which is partly owned by the band, alleges that Microsoft routinely destroys legally sensitive internal documents.
The company is suing Microsoft for theft of its patented technology and for anti-competitive practices. It alleges that Microsoft “as a matter of institutional policy has decided to destroy e-mails in anticipation of litigation”.
U2 invested $2m (€1.3m) in Burst.com more than a decade ago. The band used its data-streaming technology to broadcast its 1997 PopMart concert over the internet.

News: U2 iPod on sale in Europe 'Saturday'
(MacWorld.co.uk) -- Apple today confirmed that the new special edition U2 iPod will go on sale in the UK on November 20.
Launching Apple's new London store, senior vice president of retail Ron Johnson, said: "The new U2 iPod will be available in-store when we open on Saturday".
He also said that as of today new stocks of iPod, including the new iPod photo, are being despatched to Apple resellers across the UK.
Johnson refused to be drawn on how much stock the company anticipates having on-hand, saying: "We'll do our darndest to be in stock for people; we hope we have enough stock, at least for the beginning of the day."

News: The new U2 album
(BostonHerald.com) -- U2 takes a risk with its new ``How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb,'' in stores Tuesday.
Not a musical risk. A marketing risk.
Unless its songs enter the pantheon of fan favorites that now stretches from ``Sunday Bloody Sunday'' to ``Beautiful Day,'' ``How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb'' is in jeopardy of being remembered not for its artistry, but for its iPod connection.
If you watched the Red Sox during the playoffs - hell, if you've watched any TV at all this fall - you've seen the instantly iconic iPod ad featuring black silhouettes of U2 cavorting against glowing colors to the sound of the band's peppy new single ``Vertigo.'' If you're not yet tired of hearing Bono count, ``Unos, dos, tres, catorce,'' you will be.
At this point in time, even longtime fans can't feign shock at the sight of U2 trading kisses with Big Business. Everyone does it, a handful of holdouts like Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty aside. And honorable U2 didn't accept any cash for its hookup with Apple - which includes production of a red and black U2 iPod that comes with ``How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb'' stored on it, and the iTunes Music Store's online release of ``The Complete U2,'' with 400 songs, 25 previously unreleased.

News: U2 rocker set to roll in €200,000 with carpet auction
(Belfast Telegraph) -- U2 star Adam Clayton is to sell off his collection of exotic carpets worth over €200,000 at a special auction at Christies in London.
The rugs, known as the Adam Clayton Collection, range from small kilims to intricate Persian rugs dating back to the 18th century.
Art dealers and antique hunters are more likely to be vying against each other rather than any rock band fans as the entire collection of 67 rugs is expected to make over €200,000 at the Country Furniture and Works of Art auction next month.

News: U2-edition iPod coming soon?
(Thinksecret.com) -- Apple and U2's relationship is only warming up, multiple source say. The band has already released its new single initially exclusively through the iTunes Music Store, threatened to release the entire album through iTunes if it leaks early, and recorded a 2-minute commercial for Apple. Up next: a U2-edition iPod, tipsters say.
While Think Secret has been unable to confirm this with one-hundred percent certainty, sources say that Apple is planning to release the U2-edition iPod around the week of November 21, when U2's new album will hit stores. For a small premium over the regular iPod, said to be around $30, the U2-edition iPod will feature a distinctive enclosure and will come pre-loaded with all the band's major album releases.

News: Bono’s noble work gets Nobel Prize nomination
(IrishExaminer.com) -- By Alister Doyle, Oslo
BONO has been nominated for the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize, it emerged yesterday.
It is the second year in a row that the U2 singer has been nominated.
He is running against French president Jacques Chirac, the governor of the US state of Illinois who spared all inmates on death row, Pope John Paul II and a Cuban dissident.
“We have a total of 150 nominees so far, of which 21 are organisations,” Geir Lundestad, the head of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, said yesterday after compiling a list of names sent by the February 1 deadline. The institute only gives the overall number of nominees but does not name them.

News: Bono Applauds Bush's Call For AIDS Spending
(Launch.com) -- Bono of U2 is applauding President George W. Bush's call to increase federal spending to combat the global AIDS crisis. During his State Of The Union address last Tuesday (January 28), Bush asked Congress to increase spending on the cause from $5 to $15 billion over the next seven years.
Speaking on behalf of DATA, an organization that helps raise funds to fight AIDS, Bono said, "If we can turn the president's bold long-term vision into near-term results, we're excited." The singer added, "Any delay in increased funding means more lives lost and an even bigger check in the future." There are roughly 30 million people on the African continent alone who are afflicted with AIDS.
