U2 tour - it's a date!

TORONTO -- Prepare to be elevated -- U2-style.
The Irish rockers will unveil the North American dates of their "U2 Elevation Tour" this afternoon, but The Toronto Sun has already learned the details, including the T.O. stop -- May 24 at the Air Canada Centre.
In an exclusive interview, Toronto-based SFX Touring president Arthur Fogel said the 32-city North American tour, named after a song off U2's latest album, All That You Can't Leave Behind, will begin March 24 at the National Car Arena in Miami and conclude June 19 at New York City's Madison Square Garden. Other Canadian dates are Calgary on April 9, Vancouver on April 13 and Montreal May 27.
Fogel said there is the possibility of two shows in some markets, including Toronto.
"We have a bunch of different scenarios to juggle around; it's possible, I can't say for certain," he said.
What is known is that tickets for the Toronto show, $130 (golden circle in the stands on either side of stage), $85 and $45, go on sale this Saturday. Fogel said just under 50% of the tickets are at the low end, price-wise.
"For us it's tremendously exciting, and going back into arenas even adds to the atmosphere of anticipation," Fogel said. "Clearly, their last couple of tours have been stadium tours. Bigger is better, but this one is going in, obviously, just about the opposite direction.
"I think that is absolutely the right move at this point for the band. It's partly because of the kind of album (it is). Also, after you've done all the bells and whistles a couple of times around the world in stadiums, it makes sense to change it up.
"I'm sure, for them personally, getting back into smaller venues is something they're looking forward to, after playing at the stadium level this long."
So after U2's over-the-top spectacle of Popmart in 1997, the Elevation Tour will be a much more scaled-down affair.
"There's certainly going to be a couple of show-stoppers, but essentially it's a pretty stripped-down, clean stage," Fogel said. "It's a 360-degree sightline so they'll be selling (tickets) right around -- even though the stage is at the end, as opposed to in the middle. But the show is designed for 360, and in order to do that properly, you have to have a pretty clean stage. And that's exactly what this is. I think it's really what a lot of people want to see U2 do at this point."
Fogel couldn't say yet how long the concerts might run, but he did divulge that U2 will begin rehearsals in Dublin before crossing the Atlantic the second week of March to continue in Miami.
The tour announcement comes after U2 was nominated last week for three Grammys, including song and record of the year for Beautiful Day.
Fogel didn't know if the band would be attending the prestigious music awards, but did say there isn't a concert scheduled for Feb. 21, when the Grammys take place.
Following the North American leg, the 20-year rock veterans will continue on to the U.K. and Europe by the second week of July and through the third week of August.
