Rock Group U2 to Launch Tour in March
Posted on Wednesday, January 10 @ 01:33:45 CET by Macphisto
-----------------------------------------------
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Irish rock group U2 will launch a 34-city North American arena tour in March in support of its latest album, "All That You Can't Leave Behind," it was announced Tuesday.
U2, whose hit single "Beautiful Day" from that album earned three Grammy nominations last week, last took to the road in 1997 for its highly successful "PopMart" stadium tour.
The latest outing, dubbed the "U2 Elevation Tour 2001," will kick off in Miami on March 24 and run through June, followed by a summer European tour, the band said though its publicist.
Tickets for the U.S. and Canadian shows will go on sale beginning Saturday. Details of the European tour, which will include stops in the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, France, Denmark, Ireland and England, will be announced at a later date.
Billboard magazine has reported the European leg of the tour would include about 30 appearances.
In a departure from U.S. arena tours of major rock acts, U2 will open the entire floor of its North American shows to "general admission" tickets for $45 per person, accounting for nearly half the tickets sold for each performance. Reserved seating will be available for $85, with a limited amount of "golden-circle" seating at $130 per ticket.
"With no seats on the floor, these shows are going to be very exciting," the band's manager, Paul McGuinness, said in a statement. "The fans and the band are going to be really close. Nearly half the house will be at the lower ticket price and some of those tickets, the ones on the floor, will be the very best in the house."
Purchases will be limited to tickets per person for general admission and four tickets for reserved seats.
"All That You Can't Leave Behind," the band's 10th album, has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide since its release in October and features the hit "Beautiful Day," which earned Grammy nominations for song of the year, record of the year and best rock performance by a duo or group.
The overall album was released too late to be considered for this year's Grammys.
U2 last went on tour for its 1997 "PopMart" stadium extravaganza that drew nearly 4 million fans to shows in 70 cities worldwide and ranked as the top-grossing tour that year. The band's last arena tour was in 1992.
The group's lead guitarist, Edge, told Reuters in October that staging for the "Elevation Tour" would be relatively simple compared with the grandiose production of "PopMart."
