New rules on rock concerts no consolation for fans of U2

Posted on Wednesday, March 14 @ 01:22:50 CET by macphisto
-----------------------------------------------

(Unison.ie) -- A NEW licensing system for outdoor concerts is to be rushed through the Dail, but it may not be in time to give disappointed U2 fans what they are looking for - a second concert date in Slane.

Lord Henry Mount Charles last night welcomed the licensing move, and said he was looking in to the feasibility of running a second show but acknowledged the new regulations have yet to be passed by both Houses of the Oireachtas.

In a statement yesterday, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Environment Minister Noel Dempsey said the licensing system for outdoor concerts, provided for in the Planning and Development Act 2000, will be introduced as a priority measure.

The latest controversy was sparked after tickets for U2's only Irish concert at Slane which will end their Elevation tour, sold out in 45 minutes at the weekend.

Bono said he felt sick after he read reports of people queueing for hours and still going home empty-handed, and appealed to the Government and the people of Slane to allow them play another gig at the castle.

Lord Henry Mount Charles last night said: "I do things by the book. As it stands - it is only one concert a year. Under the licensing system it would be possible to apply to the local authority for a licence for a second concert. Without question there is demand for such an event to take place."

He said he was making soundings about running a second concert but there were a number of hurdles to be jumped.

Concert promoters MCD said it was delighted at the development but it was now over to the people of Slane.

He said Bono and U2 had said they will play a second concert on September 1, a week after their first concert at the Castle. "It is now up to the people of Slane to see it in their hearts to allow it. It needs the goodwill of people of Slane," MCD spokesman Justin Green said.

A Department of Environment spokesperson said the new regulations may not impact on the possibility of a second U2 concert as there was no guarantee the legislation would be passed by the Dail and the Seanad in time.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said it was clear for some time the planning system is not the appropriate vehicle to consider applications for outdoor events. "That was the reason we included in the new Planning and Development Act a more appropriate licensing system which will cover a wide range of events, including concerts such as those held in Slane and which will shorten the decision making process," he commented.

Meanwhile, U2 fans without a ticket for Slane may still find what they're looking for - but at a hefty cost.

Tickets for the Slane gig are clocking up record bids on the internet.

Irish-based online auction site, ebid.ie is receiving massive bids for around 15 pairs of the most coveted tickets in Irish rock history.

Last night a bid of £500 had been put on one pair of tickets with bids of £250 and £300 on two other sets. However ebid.ie managing director Conor Jones said the bids would increase as long as there was a market.

The internet site, based in Dublin, operates as a trading platform for individuals to sell everything from art collectibles to television sets.

With the U2 tickets in such demand it is likely a bidding war will hot up before fans give up on their chance of a beautiful day.

Tom Shiel reports that a Co Mayo GAA club has offered its facilities for an additional U2 concert.

Castlebar Mitchels said following the huge demand for a second U2 gig, the club has offered its extensive facilities at MacHale Park as a viable location for the staging of the band's second Irish concert.

The club already holds full planning permission from the local authority to hold six outdoor concerts on its grounds.

According to club spokesman Finian Joyce, the facilities include an all-seater stadium for up to 36,000 with the capability for almost 60,000 when on-pitch standing accommodation is included.
