U2 wins top pick for best album of all time

LONDON (Reuters) - The magic of the Fab Four appears to have fizzled.
The lads from Liverpool ranked a measly eighth place in a VH-1 poll of the 100 greatest albums of all time.
Usurping the Beatles' status as the history's top music machine were that other foursome, Irish rockers U2, whose album "The Joshua Tree" made the number one spot.
It defeated the best-selling album of all time, Michael Jackson's "Thriller", which has sold an estimated 45 million copies worldwide since its release in 1982.
Nineties rock albums dominated the top ten in the survey of 250,000 music fans, pundits and even artists themselves.
Rogue lads Oasis banged into the third spot with "What's the Story Morning Glory?", while Nirvana's "Nevermind" was fifth ahead of Radiohead's "The Bends" in sixth place.
Seventies plump popster Meat Loaf ranked a heavyweight fourth place with "Bat Out of Hell", ahead of two Beatles albums widely considered masterpieces -- "Revolver" and ninth-ranked "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club".
Madonna's groove-laden 1998 release "Ray of Light" slid into tenth place.
All 100 picks will be counted down in a special VH-1 show on Saturday.
