U2's Bono, Bush & Stipe Share Thoughts On World AIDS Day

(Launch.com) --
In recognition of World AIDS Day on Saturday (December 1), U2 singer Bono, R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, and Bush's Gavin Rossdale shared their thoughts how we must support efforts to create awareness and support AIDS research.
Bono organized an all-star recording of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" this year to benefit Artists Against AIDS Worldwide and the Global AIDS Alliance with proceeds going to help out the African AIDS crisis. He said in a statement that people must stand behind the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI).
"The only way to defeat this plague is with a vaccine. If we can put a man on the moon, we can do this too. Sign the petition www.iavi.org/callforaction and tell world leaders to save millions of lives."
R.E.M.'s Stipe, who appeared on the "What's Going On" recording, told LAUNCH, "I'd say probably the most important thing is for people who have heterosexual sex not to believe that they can't be affected by AIDS," he said. "And to have a great time -- a really good time, but be really careful doing it, so you can write about it and talk about it later in life."
Bush's Rossdale told LAUNCH that the issue of AIDS has hit close to home. "I know a couple of people. I've been to two or three funerals of acquaintances that I know of and, out of respect, have been to their funerals. No close friends. And my friend in London did a whole movie on the quilt thing, which was filmed in Hyde Park, and they laid out all the quilts," he said. "The biggest message seemed to be the whole emphasis of the day was it's not a statistic--rather, it's a name. It's a person with the reverberations of family, friends, workmates, everything."
Rossdale added, "For someone who was reasonably ignorant of--you know, haven't quite affected my social world as heavily as other social worlds--it just brought it home to me."
