Flashback 2001: U2 Has A 'Beautiful Day' At The Grammy Awards

It was a "Beautiful Day" for U2 when the group picked up three Grammys on February 21. After performing "Beautiful Day," the band and song were honored as the best rock performance by a duo or group with vocal. In his acceptance speech, lead singer Bono told the audience that he was a bit ambivalent about giving out thanks at the show: "I would like to thank God and my mother also, but I just have this feeling or picture in my head of God sort of looking down on people like at us at occasions like this and going, 'Oh, oh, don't thank me for that song, all right, you know? There's no hook, the chorus is weak, and, you know, they'll never play that on the radio.' Thanks for playing it on the radio. Thank you."
Although Bono laid claim to U2 being the "best band in the world" at the Grammy Awards on February 21, the lead singer said he understands why so many teen-pop acts have done so well over the past couple of years. Bono was asked why acts like Britney Spears and *NSYNC have been so successful lately.
"The reason why the boy bands and the girl bands have come out is going back to the '50s--let somebody who's brilliant at producing take care of that, let somebody who's great at songwriting take care of that," he said. "It's really hard to get four people this good looking who write and produce and, you know, we see ourselves as just another Irish boy band."
