U2 stuck in a planning moment

(Irish Examiner) -- By Niall Murray

THEY may be freemen of Dublin, but even members of U2 have to go through the same rigorous planning procedures as everyone else. Bono, Larry, The Edge and Adam are already facing the prospect of leaving behind their long-time studios at Hanover Quay to facilitate Dublin Docklands Development Authority plans to open up space for the public.

While the band may have benefited from rushed-through planning regulations to facilitate their second summer concert at Slane Castle, things haven't been running as smoothly so close to home for two members.

Guitarist The Edge must feel like he's stuck in a moment - he's primed for a court challenge of An Bord Pleanála's rejection of his plans, submitted in late 2000, to extend his Sorrento Cottage home in Dalkey.

He won't be alone, however, as singer Bono is facing a planning ordeal of his own: An Taisce is fighting his application for a 243 square metre extension at his Vico Road home overlooking Killiney beach.

Just before Christmas, Van Morrison was being represented at the High Court, where neighbours in Sorrento Road expressed concern about his plans to widen a driveway connecting a number of the Dalkey properties.

Bono and wife Ali will have to wait a few months before An Bord Pleanála decides whether or not to uphold the council's go-ahead for their plans. The application indicates the floor of their home would increase by more than 40% if it is extended.

The first floor would have a bedroom, utility room and stores, underneath another bedroom, office, a studio and terrace on the second floor.

The agents for both extension projects - CMB Design Group - were also the architects involved in the Clarence Hotel, owned by Bono, The Edge and Dublin businessman Harry Crosbie.

The band's management companies had nobody available to comment on the matters surrounding the planning issue yesterday.
