U2's Bono Planning To Drop In At Next G-8 Summit

(Launch.com) -- U2 frontman Bono is set to appear at the upcoming G-8 summit in the Canadian city of Kananaskis, Alberta, in June. U2's official website (u2.com) reports that Bono and Bob Geldof, the former Boomtown Rats frontman and Band Aid/Live Aid founder, plan to be in Kananaskis, where the G-8will be focusing on Africa.
The visit will be part of Bono's continuing Jubilee 2000 campaign, which promotes debt reduction for developing nations. It is nothing new for Bono, who attended last year's G-8 summit in Genoa, Italy, and also met with Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien on thesubject of debt reduction.
The U2 singer also has strong connections with American politicians. Earlier this year, he visited Washington, D.C., to speak with President George W. Bush about AIDS in Africa, and on Monday (May 20) he'llaccompany U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O' Neill and the Debt, Aid, And Trade For Africa (DATA) organization on a fact-finding visit to Africa.
Bono has had music on his mind recently, too. While working on a new studio album and a greatest-hits set for U2, he also joined the band Monday (May 13) in a satellite performance from Ireland to premiere a new song, "Hands That Built America." The track is slated to be part of the soundtrack for Martin Scorsese's forthcoming Gangs Of New York, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz, and which is tentatively scheduled for release on December 25. U2's performance was beamed to the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.
