Shortlist Adds Alanis and Larry From U2 To Panel
Posted on Saturday, August 17 @ 13:31:09 CEST by Macphisto
-----------------------------------------------
(Chartattack.com) -- It looks like the organizers of the prestigious Shortlist On Music Award have decided to make their nomination list a wee bit more accessible.
A while back we told you that the Shortlist people had announced their list of "listmakers" — the elite group of people who nominate noteworthy albums and ultimately determine who will win the Shortlist Prize. The initial crop of listmakers included luminaries such as Beck, Paul Oakenfold, Damon Albarn, Iggy Pop, Mos Def and a couple of the lads from The Strokes. Now that most of the listmakers have submitted their noms, the Shortlist people have decided to add a couple more, shall we say, populist judges: Alanis Morissette and U2's Larry Mullen Jr.
"Enlisting Larry Mullen, Jr. of U2 and Alanis Morissette to be Listmakers reflects the growth of the Shortlist Music Project and shows that our mission to expose and share left-of-center musical discoveries is gaining support and momentum among some pretty incredible artists," said Shortlist co-founder Tom Sarig.
What are the tastemakers of the nation listening to? The obvious suspects have all been covered: The Hives have been nominated twice (by Iggy Pop and The Neptunes), as have The Flaming Lips (Spike Jonze and Iggy Pop), Zero 7 (Nic Harcourt and Dan The Automator), Cee-Lo (India.Arie and Evelyn McDonnell) and N.E.R.D. (Jill Scott and Spike Jonze). The Avalances' Since I Left You album has been nominated a whopping four times — by Dan The Automator, Gustavo Santaolalla, Baz Luhrmann and Paul Oakenfold. If we were gambling types, we know who we'd be putting our money on.
Of course, there are a few maverick choices, but we don't know if many of them would, or should, actually qualify as the best album of the year. Luhrmann nominated Andrew W.K. 's I Get Wet, Kim Gordon gave nods to Mary Timony and Le Tigre and The Strokes put The Moldy Peaches' name into the hat. The Moldy Peaches as the most critically acclaimed album of the year? Well, we like "Who's Got The Crack" as much as the next guy, but if it wins the Shortlist Prize we're going to lose serious respect for everyone on the panel.
The Shortlist Prize will be given out on October 29 in Los Angeles.
