U2 can`t leave it behind

(Toronto Sun) -- Irish superstars still rockin` after two decades -- Toronto Sun
Veteran Irish rockers U2 have stayed together for over 20 years -- racking up worldwide sales of 100 million along the way -- for two basic reasons.
They`re friends first. Since high school no less.
And they still like the way just the four of them sound together in a room. Never mind a stadium.
"We still feel it`s worth getting together," said U2`s legendary guitarist The Edge, 39, down the line from New York City yesterday afternoon on the day of the group`s latest release, All That You Can`t Leave Behind.
"It`s worth being in the studio together, it`s worth going on the road together because the music`s still going off. There`s still that chemistry there when we play together. We still seem to be able to work on albums and produce great songs and go on the road and produce great concerts. I think it`s literally as simple as that."
After their experimental `90s albums and monster stadium tours -- most recently exemplified by their last release, 1997`s Pop and the playful, over-the-top PopMart tour, which featured a 35-foot lemon out of which the band emerged -- U2 has returned to a more stripped-down, basic rock sound on All That with the emphasis on the band, their instruments and their arrangements.
To help them do so, U2 turned to producers Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, who helped create some of the group`s most successful albums of the `80s.
"The reasons for working with Brian and Danny again are simply that we just love to work with them," said The Edge. "They are extraordinary individuals and bring so many different talents to a session. We`re just very lucky that they were still up for working with each other on a U2 project because they don`t really tend to collaborate with other producers. But I suppose they both were intrigued by what we might be able to achieve on this record and still excited about what the band was capable of doing."
Given the current strength of teen-oriented pop, rap-metal and hip-hop on music charts, some are viewing All That You Can`t Leave Behind as rock music`s last great hope.
"It`s been sort of said more jokingly than anything," said the guitarist, laughing at the suggestion. "I really do believe that guitar music is just waiting for a couple of really great records to come out and it`ll be back where it`s been for the last 20-30 years, on the radio where it should be and in the charts. And I just think that it`s cyclical."
The Edge, who rang an hour and a half later than he was scheduled due to other interviews running behind, called from a recording studio, where he was already busy mixing some of U2`s limited live performances thus far, as possible b-sides or future singles.
In addition to playing on top of The Clarence Hotel in Dublin in September, they treated a New York City crowd to three new songs -- Elevation, Beautiful Day (the first single) and New York -- on Monday from a balcony at MTV`s studios overlooking Times Square.
Two other U2 appearances this month will include the MTV Europe Awards on Nov. 16 and the inaugural My VH1 Music Awards show on Nov. 30.
In the meantime, an 80-date worldwide tour of arenas is expected to start in April, most likely in Miami, with Toronto tour promoter Michael Cohl once again at the helm.
The Edge couldn`t say if U2 would follow The Rolling Stones` lead and rehearse in T.O. prior to the tour launch.
"I think we`d split it between Dublin and some other place," said the guitarist. "And certainly Canada`s a good option. I don`t know currently what the plan is on rehearsals."
The Edge said nothing was planned for Toronto specifically or Canada this year, despite a Canadian Press report which quoted U2 lead singer Bono as saying there was a remote possibility of a club show.
The guitarist did say, however, a tour announcement is expected shortly. Just don`t expect the group to appear in a K-Mart like they did in New York City three years ago to promote PopMart.
"With a smaller tour, I don`t think it needs that kind of launch," said The Edge. "But we will be certainly making some sort of announcement at some point in the near future."
