U2's Bono plans Live Aid II concert

Posted on Monday, May 31 @ 10:25:20 CEST by Macphisto
-----------------------------------------------

(Reuters) -- LONDON - Irish rock star Bono is planning a repeat of the 1985 Live Aid concerts to raise money to help ease third world debt, the UK's Sun newspaper said on Monday.

Bob Geldof, the brains behind the original concert to relieve famine in Ethiopia, will also be involved, the paper claimed.

British rockers Robbie Williams, Oasis, Radiohead and Coldplay are tipped to perform at Live Aid 2.

The 1985 event raised £60 million ($176.5 million) with simultaneous concerts in Britain and the United States.

But Geldof later denied he had teamed up with Bono for a repeat of the 1985 Live Aid concerts. The Sun newspaper's front page story had earlier claimed Prime Minister Tony Blair was backing Live Aid II.

Geldof, the brains behind the original concert to relieve famine in Ethiopia, said in a statement: "I told the Sun this afternoon it was not true. This only serves to undermine the concerted efforts of those concerned with the tragedy of poverty in Africa."

"However, if the Prime Minister wants to organise a Live Aid II, then good luck to him."
