U2 gig to give fans a taste of new album

(BelfastTelegraph.co.uk) -- Fans of U2 are expected to mob the band's Dublin studios next week, hoping to catch a glimpse of their idols as they play an exclusive radio gig just days before their album hits the shops.

U2 will perform for BBC Radio 1 from their Hannover Quay studios, where the eagerly awaited 'How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb' was created. The gig is going out live on the Zane Lowe show on Tuesday between 7pm and 9pm.

Such is the anticipation of the new album that the British radio station will be basing a number of shows from Dublin in the days leading up to its launch in Ireland next Friday and across the rest of Europe the following Monday, November 22.

Pirated versions of the album have already appeared on file-sharing networks on the internet and in July an unmixed version of the album went missing during a photo shoot in France.

New albums by Eminem, Destiny's Child and Snoop Dogg have all had their release dates moved forward due to piracy fears.

Speaking about the album, singer Bono said: "At this stage of our careers, it would be easy to make something quirky.

"The challenge is to be bigger, bolder and better - to make records that the whole world will listen to, because we recognise that we are in a privileged position. The least we can do is not be crap."

Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen have a distinctive method and madness to making an album, which has seen every record the band has made since 1987's 'The Joshua Tree' sell millions.

"Most lead vocalists are very protective," drummer Larry Mullen said. "Bono's not at all precious. He's just interested in what's the best idea. So we all get involved."

Guitarist The Edge added: "It is a very instinctive process. A piece of music will show promise and everyone will agree it's worth working on. We will then start trying to find the essence of the piece."

Adam Clayton has said the album will only be fully finished when it is finally in the shops, in less than a week's time.
