U2 set to play Slane next summer

-----------------------------------------------
(Ireland on Sunday) -- SUPERGROUP U2 are definitely pencilled in to play an outdoor extravaganza at Slane castle next summer.
Ireland on Sunday can exclusively reveal that Bono and his band will play the venue on Saturday August 25.
Music industry sources say U2 have given the go-ahead to play there on that date, even though most of their world tour, which kicks off in Florida in March, will be held in more intimate 10,000-seater indoor arenas.
U2 have never headlined the venue, although they did play support to Thin Lizzy in 1981.
However, band members, particularly Bono and The Edge, have always promised to return to the natural amphitheatre in Co. Meath.
Bono brought his wife and his two daughters to Robbie Williams's show there last year and is a close personal friend of Lord Henry Mountcharles, who owns Slane castle and who first started staging concerts there to finance the upkeep and refurbishment of the historic building.
Since then, it has also played host to headline appearances by the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Guns 'n' Roses, Neil Young, REM, the Verve and Robbie Williams.
Meanwhile, organisers of the Brits awards in London on February 21 insist U2 will be honoured with the academy's "outstanding contribution to British music" prize despite being Irish.
"It's 100% definite they will get it," says a spokesman. "And we are absolutely delighted that despite a punishing schedule, they will be there on the night."
Several reports in Britain suggest rumblings of discontent among senior British music executives, unhappy at a perceived snub of British acts for what is, in essence, the industry's blue ribbon gong.
It was won two years ago by Van Morrison, who did not create similar controversy as he qualified as "British" because he hails from Belfast. Last year's winners were the Spice Girls.
The Brits spokesperson said that regardless of their nationality, U2 had done much for the global advancement of "British" music right from the beginning of the group's career.
He added: "Very early on, they made London their base. They lived and worked in the city for years. They signed to a British independent label, Island, and helped turn it into a leading brand."
U2 will perform at the ceremony in London's Earls Court on February 21. The show will be presented by Anthony McPartland and Declan Donnelly (Ant & Dec) Donnelly's parents hailed from Ireland before relocating to Newcastle.
